Every year in May the Grimsby Public Library hosts the “Battle of the Books” inter-school juvenile fiction trivia competition where local Grimsby elementary schools battle it out in a friendly match to test each groups knowledge of a selection of fantastic books.

Each participating school selects a team of 6 players ranging between Grades 3 and 6, and several rounds are played with each correct question earning the team 1 point. When the dust settles the top spot is revealed, but every team is a winner! The hard work and determination displayed by all the players make their teachers, parents, and individual school communities so proud, and everyone goes home with some goodies!

All players receive a small prize and a certificate for participating, and each school get 6 paperback books which they can incorporate into their school’s library or hand out to their players. The school with the highest score at the end of the competition gets a Scholastics Publishing gift card, and their school’s name engraved on the Battle of the Books Official Plaque to display at their school until the following year.

This year’s event had the audience on the edge of their seat and it was such a close race to the finish line. We’d like to thank each school for the hard work and effort they put in, and to give our congratulations to this year’s winner: Nelles Public School
